ASISTA Immigration Assistance presents a new web-based training opportunity on:

Enhancing Your Advocacy and Legal Skills to Stop Survivor Deportation

ASISTA is working with national experts to develop a new webinar series designed to help you prevent the deportation of survivors in the new political environment encouraging ICE enforcement.

1. Developing and Enhancing Community Organizing and Other Non-Legal Skills to Stop Survivor Deportation

In the new political environment, the normal legal approaches we have used in the past may be insufficient to prevent ICE targeting, detaining and deporting crime survivors, including those who already have VAWA and U visa status.  In this webinar we will explore the variety of social change and organizing strategies advocates and attorneys will need to employ in coming years to help ensure survivors can access safety and justice, including working with community-based partners and the media.  Join us to share you ideas as wel as learn from those with expertise in social change work.

Date & Time : Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 1:30pm - 3:30pm EST.

Panelists: Cecelia Friedman Levin, Senior Policy Counsel, ASISTA; Sameera Hafiz, Advocacy Director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA); Hans Meyer, Lead Attorney and Founder of Meyer Law Office, P.C.; and Gail Pendleton, Executive Director, ASISTA

CLOSED - to request recording, please email manager@asistahelp.org

2. Stays of Removal

In this webinar, national experts will discuss how they learned to do stays of removal for their survivor clients, passing on best practice tips and answering your questions on how to use your existing skills and knowledge in working with VAWA and U applicants to successfully file stays preventing their removal.

Date & Time: Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm EST.

Panelists: Audrey Carr, Director of Immigration and Special Programs, Legal Services, NYC, Cecelia Friedman Levin, Senior Policy Counsel; ASISTA,, Mona Patel-Sikora, Directing Attorney, Immigration Center for Women & Children, and Gail Pendleton, Executive Director, ASISTA

CLOSED - to request recording, please email manager@asistahelp.org

3. When Stays Fail: Learning to Go to Federal Court

Many of us who have spent our legal career working with VAWA and U applicants have never had to  go to federal court to further or defend the rights of the survivors we represent.  If we wish to continue effectively helping crime survivors, we must now learn how to go to federal court to make the government implement these humanitarian laws as Congress intended.  Join national experts to learn how to identify federal court options, apply your existing skills and knowledge to various options, and develop the new skills and expertise you will need in the coming years.  We will discuss creative ways to use various kinds of federal court filings to address the many barriers and challenges now facing immigrant survivors, including delays in decision-making, expanded detention and removal,  and systematic misapplication of the law by CIS and ICE.  We will review basic federal court concepts/issues you must address, and identify next steps you should take to build the skills you need to effectively help the survivors you serve.

Date & Time : Wednesday, September 27, 2017 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm EST.

Panelists: Maria Baldini-Potermin, Attorney and Founder of Maria Baldini-Potermin & Associates, PC Cecelia Friedman Levin, Senior Policy Counsel, ASISTA; Geoffrey Hoffman, Director, University of Houston Law Center Immigration Clinic; and Gail Pendleton, Executive Director, ASISTA
